A single-molecule diode.
We have designed and synthesized a molecular rod that consists of two weakly coupled electronic pi -systems with mutually shifted energy levels. The asymmetry thus implied manifests itself in a current-voltage characteristic with pronounced dependence on the sign of the bias voltage, which makes the molecule a prototype for a molecular diode. The individual molecules were immobilized by sulfur-...

In the pursuit of down-sizing electronic components, the ultimate limit is the use of single molecules as functional devices. The first theoretical proposal of such a device, predicted more than four decades ago, is the seminal Aviram-Ratner rectifier that exploits the orbital structure of the molecule. The experimental realization of single-molecule rectifiers, however, has proven to be challe...
متن کاملSingle photon avalanche diode for single molecule detection
A commercially available single photon avalanche photodiode in a passively quenched circuit is used with time-correlated single photon counting modules to achieve subnanosecond time response together with high quantum efficiency and low dark noise. These characteristics are required for experiments in single molecule detection and spectroscopy in which time-gated detection schemes are used. By ...

متن کاملCurrent rectification in a single molecule diode: the role of electrode coupling.
We demonstrate large rectification ratios (> 100) in single-molecule junctions based on a metal-oxide cluster (polyoxometalate), using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) both at ambient conditions and at low temperature. These rectification ratios are the largest ever observed in a single-molecule junction, and in addition these junctions sustain current densities larger than 10(5) A cm(-2)....
